Callaway Cars pulled the covers off its new Callaway Corvette GT3-R race car. This weapons-grade Corvette replaces Callaway’s successful C6 Corvette-based Z06.R GT3 for the upcoming 2016 racing season.
The GT3-R features a radically widened body, with a deep front bumper and intake area, along with a full aero kit. Under the mostly carbon-fiber body beats a 6.2-liter V-8 heart, spitting out 600 hp. Power is routed to the rear wheels through an X-Trac six-speed sequential gearbox with paddle shifters. Inside, the GT3-R has the majority of the interior elements constructed out of carbon fiber to help keep the weight low.
Not much has been revealed about Callaway’s production intentions for the GT3-R. However, it is likely that Callaway Competition will act as a supplier for those racers or teams who want to purchase a GT3-R for their own use.
For those wishing to park a street-legal Callaway Corvette in their driveway, Callaway Cars also offers a range of upgrade packages for regular Corvettes. The current Callaway SC627, for example, adds supercharged power to the standard C7 Stingray, bringing power up between 167 – 172 hp, and 145 -150 lb-ft of torque depending on whether or not the Stingray is equipped with the optional sport exhaust, for a grand total of up to 627 hp and 610 lb-ft of torque.
