Cadillac CUE Adds Apple CarPlay, Android Auto for 2016

Cadillac’s much-maligned CUE infotainment system will get a big upgrade soon when it gains Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. All 2016 Cadillac models will offer Apple CarPlay, except for the SRX crossover which will be redesigned early next year. Android Auto will be phased in later on in the model year.

Apple CarPlay will be available in all 2016 Cadillac models equipped with the eight-inch CUE touch-screen system starting this summer. Like in other CarPlay-equipped vehicles, the system essentially mirrors the iPhone’s screen onto the car’s infotainment display, with large app icons for phone, music, and navigation functions along with other user apps. It requires the phone to be connected by USB, and is compatible with an iPhone 5 or higher. Android Auto works similarly, but for smartphones with the Android Lollipop operating software.

The CUE infotainment system itself also benefits from other updates for 2016, which Cadillac says will offer “new features and a faster, streamlined operation.” We complained about the finicky system in both our Four Seasons 2014 Cadillac CTS and 2013 Cadillac ATS sedans, criticizing its overly sensitive touch-capacitive controls and complex menu structure.

We’ll see if the updates can fix some of these issues when we try the updated CUE system. Stay tuned for more information about the rollout of Apple CarPlay across the 2016 Cadillac lineup.
